A wiki is software run on a Web server that allows users to freely create and edit Web page content using any Web browser.
The word wiki is a shorter form of wiki wiki (weekie, weekie): native Hawaiian commonly used as an adjective to denote something "quick" or "fast." As an adverb, wiki means "quickly" or "fast."
Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, is one of the largest and most referenced wikis.
Essential wiki characteristics include:
- Collective, community-based authoring
- Quick publishing with little approval
- Structured text without the need to understand HTML coding
- Categorized browsing
- Search functionality
- Extensive linking to other internal wiki pages and elements as well as other relevant external resources
- Active and applied community philosophy about correcting errors or inaccuracies
- Tracking for various wiki elements, like pages, users, versions, etc.
